Postal Office Service

President Obama's Comment Raises Ire of Postal Service Supporter

Denver, CO (PRWEB) August 20, 2009 -- Darrell Houghton, a Denver businessman, has come to the defense of the U.S. Postal Service. In a statement released on his company's website, Houghton suggested that the President apologize for his remarks referring to the USPS as "always having problems". Houghton is president of Aloha Forwarding, a package forwarding service that uses the Postal Service exclusively.

"I couldn't believe it when I heard the President," said Houghton from his Denver office. "The Postal Service has always been maligned by people, but when I heard what the President said, I had to speak out. I have a professional relationship with a lot of people who work for the Postal Service, from my local carrier all the way up to people at the Post Master General's office in Washington D.C. They don't deserve to be disparaged like that, especially from the President of the United States."

What do you do when you're upset at the President? "The only way I could think of to respond was to post a letter standing up for the USPS on my company website," said Houghton, who hopes there will be a groundswell of support for the Post Office. "People don't realize how much the Postal Service touches people's lives on a daily basis. This letter was something I could do to show my support."

The text of Houghton's statement follows:

"President Obama, in a town hall meeting in Portsmouth, New Hampshire on August 11th, 2009, made some disparaging remarks about the U.S. Postal Service in an attempt to support his health care plan. President Obama stated, "I mean, if you think about it, UPS and FedEx are doing just fine, right? No, they are. It's the Post Office that's always having problems."

No, Mr. President, the Post Office is not always having problems. And I believe sir, that you owe the fine men and women of the U.S. Postal Service an apology.

No one offers a better value than the U.S. Postal Service when it comes to shipping to Hawaii, Alaska and U.S. Territories. Having lived in Hawaii for 5 years, I know the challenges people face in finding affordable package delivery from mainland merchants. For Hawaii, Alaska and U.S. Territory residents, oftentimes the cost of shipping a package via UPS or FedEx can cost more than the item itself. I'm surprised you don't have more empathy, Mr. President. After all, you were born in Hawaii.

Millions of businesses, like my package forwarding company, Aloha Forwarding, depend heavily upon the USPS to deliver products to customers at an affordable price. All of our packages have always been delivered in a timely manner and the Postal Service has never lost any of our packages.

I'm sure I speak for a lot of people when I express my disappointment in President Obama disparaging the U.S. Postal Service in order to make a political point. The U.S. Postal Service is an incredible value that saves a lot of people a lot of money. For example, a 2-pound package shipped from the mainland to Hawaii costs about $38 via UPS. That same package shipped via Priority Mail is only $8.70.

The mail services provided by the U.S. Postal Service allows many people to receive items that are difficult to obtain locally, at an affordable price. Without the Postal Service, for many, their cost of living would go up while their standard of living would go down. In these tough economic times, that is the last thing the President should want.

As a businessman who would literally be out of business if it weren't for the Postal Service, I would like to express my continued support for the men and women of the U.S. Postal Service. Their hard work helps make my business a success."
